Stream and Pond Habitats

A small natural stream, the so-called “Kayenmühlengraben”, originates in the orchid-rich wet meadow and flows through the garden from west to east. In earlier times, this stream flowed naturally through what is today known as the “Werftdreieck” part of town where it powered the Kayen mill. Along its route, it is further fed through several seepage areas that also provide water to three ponds. This natural favorableness of the garden site has allowed for the construction of different stream and pond habitats, as well as water-dependent habitats such as swamps, floodplains, and bogs.
